Catholic Counsellor in Calgary, Alberta
Your Faith shouldn’t have to be sidelined.
If the Catholic Faith and anthropology of the human person matters deeply to you, it can be difficult to imagine counselling with someone who may not understand it.
INTEGRATING FAITH & THERAPY
Catholic Counselling That Takes the Whole Person Seriously.
I’m Dawson Diment, MA, a Calgary-based counsellor offering individual and couples counselling for clients who want thoughtful, evidence-informed therapy that can also be grounded in a Catholic understanding of the human person.
My background has included involvement in Catholic healing and formation ministries, which has shaped my interest in the intersection of psychological healing, relationship, meaning, and Catholic anthropology.
For Catholic clients, that can mean working with someone who understands the importance of faith, conscience, vocation, marriage, suffering, freedom, virtue, prayer, and the dignity of the person without requiring you to explain or defend those parts of your life.
At the same time, you do not need to be Catholic to work with me. Parable Counselling welcomes clients from all backgrounds, and faith is incorporated only when it is important and helpful to you.
A Deeper Understanding of Your Story.
A Catholic anthropology begins with the conviction that every person possesses inherent dignity and cannot be reduced simply to symptoms, behaviours, diagnoses, or problems to be fixed.
In counselling, this means I aim to understand not only what is happening, but also:
who you are
what matters most to you;
what kind of person you want to become;
what patterns may be keeping you stuck;
how your relationships have shaped you;
where greater freedom may be possible; and
what a meaningful and integrated life would look like for you.
For clients who desire it, Catholic faith and spirituality can be part of that conversation rather than something that has to remain outside the counselling room.
What Makes Catholic Counselling Different?
Many Catholics seek out a Catholic counsellor because they want to know that a central part of their worldview will be understood.
You may have wondered:
Will my therapist understand why my faith matters so much to me?
Will I have to explain Catholic teaching before we can talk about my actual concerns?
Will my beliefs be treated as part of the problem?
Can psychology and Catholic faith actually work together?
My goal is not to turn counselling into spiritual direction or to insert religious content into every session.
Rather, if your Catholic faith is important to you, I want you to know it can be brought into the room naturally and respectfully.
That might involve exploring how your beliefs relate to:
identity;
relationships and marriage;
forgiveness;
shame and guilt;
suffering;
vocation;
freedom and responsibility;
prayer and spiritual life;
sexuality and intimacy;
virtue and character; or
the way you understand yourself and others.
Faith integration is always collaborative and client-led.
Counselling for Catholic Men
Many men wait a long time before reaching out for counselling.
Sometimes the problem has become impossible to ignore. Other times, life may look relatively fine from the outside while internally there is a growing sense of frustration, numbness, anxiety, purposelessness, anger, or disconnection.
I work with men around concerns including:
anxiety and stress;
anger and emotional regulation;
relationships and marriage;
pornography or unwanted patterns of behaviour;
identity and direction;
fatherhood;
work and responsibility;
loneliness;
shame;
faith; and
meaning and purpose.
Counselling does not need to mean endlessly analyzing your feelings.
It can also be practical, purposeful, honest, and directed toward meaningful change.
Catholic Couples Counselling in Calgary
For Catholic couples, faith can be included in a way that respects the meaning you place on marriage, commitment, sexuality, forgiveness, family life, and vocation.
Couples counselling is not about deciding who is right.
The goal is to understand the pattern the relationship has become trapped in and help both partners move toward greater honesty, connection, and security.
