COUPLES COUNSELLING IN CALGARY

Relationships can get stuck in patterns that neither person intended.

At Parable Counselling, Dawson Diment provides couples counselling in Calgary and online across Alberta, helping couples understand what keeps going wrong beneath the surface—and begin building a more secure, connected relationship.

Sometimes the problem isn't the problem.

Maybe you argue about communication, parenting, sex, money, responsibilities, or whose turn it was to do something.

But somehow, the conversation keeps ending in the same place.

One person pushes harder to be heard. The other shuts down or pulls away. Someone becomes defensive. Someone feels dismissed. Small moments become loaded with everything that has happened before.

The truth is, the details of the argument may change.

But the pattern underneath it often doesn't.

You might find yourselves thinking:

  • Why do we keep having the same fight?

  • Why does everything turn into an argument?

  • Why do I feel alone even when we're together?

  • Why does my partner shut down when I need them?

  • Why does it feel like nothing I do is enough?

  • Can we actually get back to how we used to feel?

What can couples counselling help with?

Couples counselling at Parable can support relationships facing:

Emotional Distance & Disconnection

Feeling more like roommates than partners, struggling to reach each other, or wondering where the closeness went.

Communication & Recurring Conflict

Conversations that escalate, go nowhere, or keep returning to the same unresolved issues.

Strengthening a Good Relationship

You don't need to be on the verge of separation to benefit from couples counselling. Sometimes the goal is simply to understand each other better and build something stronger.

Life Transitions & Parenting

Adjusting to marriage, children, changing roles, work demands, stress, loss, or other transitions that place pressure on the relationship.

Your experience may not fit neatly into one category. Counselling makes room for the whole picture.

THE PATTERN IS THE PROBLEM

When couples get stuck, there is usually a cycle.

My approach to couples counselling is strongly informed by Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson.

Rather than deciding who is right or teaching you how to argue more effectively, we become curious about what happens between you when connection feels threatened.

For example:

I don't feel important to you → I criticize or pursue → You feel like you can't get it right → You withdraw or become defensive → I feel even more alone → I push harder.

Neither person created the cycle on purpose.

But once it becomes established, each person's attempt to protect themselves can unintentionally trigger the other.

Couples counselling helps us slow that cycle down, understand what is happening underneath it, and begin creating different experiences with one another.

Communication matters. Connection comes first.

Communication techniques can be useful.

But knowing the "right words" doesn't always help when you're hurt, angry, afraid, rejected, or shutting down.

That's why our work will often go beneath the argument itself.

We may explore what happens inside each of you during difficult moments, the fears or needs that are harder to express, and the ways you've learned to protect yourselves when connection feels uncertain.

Over time, the aim is not simply to have fewer arguments.

It's to build a relationship where each of you can become more accessible, responsive, and emotionally engaged with the other—especially when things are difficult.

Your relationship has a story too.

Every relationship develops its own language, memories, wounds, rituals, disappointments, inside jokes, turning points, and hopes.

Some chapters may have brought you closer.

Others may have changed the way you see each other.

Couples counselling isn't about pretending the painful parts never happened or trying to return to an earlier version of your relationship.

It's about understanding the story you've created together, addressing what has come between you, and deciding what you want the next chapter to look like.

Faith can have a place here. It doesn't have to.

Parable Counselling welcomes couples from all backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences.

For couples who desire it, counselling can thoughtfully incorporate Christian faith, spirituality, marriage, forgiveness, vocation, sexuality, suffering, and shared values alongside evidence-based psychological care.

For couples who don't want faith incorporated into counselling, it won't be.

You do not need to share a particular worldview to be respected or welcomed here.
